The subsurface ownership is generally severed from the surface ownership and in some states the subsurface ownership is dominant to the surface ownership. When lands are encumbered by oil and gas leases and production, it is important to be able to properly identify the mineral and leasehold owners’ interest and find ways to work together to accommodate for wind and solar projects.
